Presentation of the Field
English Studies offer an in-depth understanding of the English language and its literatures from the Middle Ages to the present. The discipline combines historical and systematic perspectives to focus on the major areas of English and American literatures, English linguistics, and the evolution of the language from Beowulf to the present day.
Skilled written expression and an attentive interdisciplinary approach are essential components of the field.

The BCU Language and Literature Collections include a large open-access area on the first and second floors of the library. The English Studies Reserve Shelves are also located there.
Within the English language (call numbers 420-429) and literature sections (call numbers 810 to 829) there are reference sources, works on general English linguistics, semantics, sociolinguistics and also on literary history and literary criticsm, and a wide range of works in English by British, American, and other authors from around the world.
Academic journals are also available for on-site consultation.

The OED started life more than 150 years ago. Today, the dictionary is in the process of its first major revision. Updates revise and extend the OED at regular intervals, each time subtly adjusting our image of the English language.

OSEO currently includes writers active between 1485 and 1901, plus Classical Latin and Greek authors — from Aeschylus, Austen, Bentham, Catullus, Dickens, and Donne through to Virgil and Wordsworth.
